Council Deadlocks on Spending Plan

Share

A divided Carson City Council this week rejected a $29.45-million spending package for the current fiscal year, leaving council members to continue budget sessions next week.

Council members Tuesday deadlocked 2 to 2, with Councilwoman Sylvia L. Muise joining Mayor Vera Robles DeWitt in voting for the 1990-91 spending plan. Council members Juanita McDonald and Michael I. Mitoma, who are opposed to layoffs proposed in the budget, voted against the plan. Councilwoman Kay A. Calas was absent.

The city, which began its budget deliberations in April, has spent more than $6 million since the current fiscal year began on July 1, DeWitt said. City expenditures are continuing at a pace that would lead to a deficit unless a new budget, with substantial cuts in spending, is adopted, she said. A budget workshop is scheduled at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
