TENNIS ROUNDUP : Ivanisevic’s Victory in England Keeps Him in Running for ATP

Second-seeded Goran Ivanisevic of Yugoslavia kept alive his chances to make the ATP Finals by defeating Thierry Champion of France, 6-4, 6-2, Wednesday in the first round of the Wembley indoor tournament outside London.

Ivanisevic is ninth in the race for the eight-player ATP Finals next week in Germany, but he can move past Austria’s Thomas Muster by winning the tournament.

In other matches, seventh-seeded Jakob Hlasek defeated Gary Muller of South Africa, 7-5, 7-5, Magnus Larsson of Sweden upset fourth-seeded Guy Forget of France, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5), and Patrick McEnroe surprised No. 8 Scott Davis, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4.

Katerina Maleeva beat fellow Bulgarian Elena Pampoulova, 6-1, 6-2, and moved into the quarterfinals of the $150,000 Jell-O tournament at Indianapolis.

In other matches, Raffaella Reggi of Italy got past Angelica Gavaldon, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5; Shaun Stafford beat Linda Harvey-Wild, 6-1, 6-2, and Meredith McGrath defeated Donna Faber, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).

Unseeded Udo Riglewski of Germany upset fourth-seeded Richey Reneberg, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, in the Kremlin Cup at Moscow.

In other matches, Tim Mayotte beat Patrick Kuhnen of Germany, 6-3, 7-6; eighth-seeded Andrei Cherkasov of the Soviet Union beat Gilad Bloom of Israel, 6-3, 6-3, and Alexander Volkov of the Soviet Union defeated Alexander Mronz of Germany, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.

Second-seeded Mary Joe Fernandez routed Florencia Labat of Argentina, 6-1, 6-3, in the New England Virginia Slims tournament at Worcester, Mass.

In other matches, seventh-seeded Natalia Zvereva of the Soviet Union eliminated Renata Baranski of Poland, 6-2, 6-3, and fifth-seeded Manuela Maleeva-Fragniere of Bulgaria beat Elizabeth Smylie of Australia, 6-1, 6-1.

Mats Wilander coasted past Joao Cunha Silva of Portugal, 6-2, 6-2, and advanced to the quarterfinals of the $250,000 Citibank Tournament at Itaparica, Brazil.
