Top-seeded Pete Sampras withdrew because of injury and fifth-seeded Aaron Krickstein was upset by Peter Lundgren of Sweden, 7-5, 6-4, Thursday in an indoor tennis tournament at Wembley, England, leaving only three seeded players entering the quarterfinals.

Sampras pulled out before his second-round match against Christian Bergstrom because of painful shin splints that threaten to keep him out of next week’s ATP Finals.

“If I played today there could be a chance of more serious injury,” he said. “My health comes before anything. I’m 19 years old and I don’t want to be retired by the time I’m 23.”
