Breaking a 17-year winning streak, the Pierce College Roundup newspaper was edged out by the Canyon Call from College of the Canyons in Valencia and the Lariat from Saddleback College in Mission Viejo in the annual Journalism Assn. of Community Colleges competition.

The Oct. 27 event at the Woodland Hills campus was attended by about 400 student journalists from 29 colleges throughout Southern California and Nevada. Competition consisted of both on-the-spot and mail-in contests that included clips from the newspapers.

College of the Canyons earned 31 awards to take first-place honors, while Pierce and Saddleback each captured 30 awards. Saddleback took second because its awards were higher placed.

Pierce won 14 on-the-spot honors, more than ever before, and 16 mail-in awards. Roundup editor John Pope won five awards, including three in the on-the-spot category.

“I think we did commendably well,” said Roundup adviser Rob O’Neil.

Pierce broke another 17-year winning streak last semester at the association’s statewide competition when it came in seventh out of 70 schools.

“The other schools are starting to catch up to Pierce,” O’Neil said.
