Young Men at War

The movie “Memphis Belle” was criticized Oct. 28 in two letters as bringing dishonor upon 8th Air Force crewmen.

After reading about the picture in the newsletter of the B-17 Combat Crewmen Assn., seeing it with a friend who flew in the 15th Air Force and recalling my own experiences as a radioman/gunner in the 8th, I have to say that the letter writers missed the point of this excellent production.

We were touched by the portrayals of the crewmen as real live boys and not as the phony heroes of the old war movies.

In reality, flyers did all the things, good and bad, that 20-year-olds normally do and, in the air, they did the job as best they knew how.

There is no dishonor in that.
