California gobbled up the 20th-ranked Oregon Ducks in three quick bites.

The Golden Bears scored touchdowns on their first three possessions and went on to defeat Oregon, 28-3, Saturday, assuring themselves of their first winning season since 1982.

“This win really puts us over the hump,” Cal Coach Bruce Snyder said. “We’ve got a winning season and we’re in second place (tied with USC).”

Anthony Wallace ran for two touchdowns and Mike Pawlawski passed for two more for the Bears, 6-3-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the Pacific 10. They moved into second place in the conference.

Cal finishes its season next Saturday against Stanford.

The Ducks (7-3, 3-3) turned the ball over five times and were held without a touchdown for the first time this season. They have lost all three of their road games this season.

Oregon quarterback Bill Musgrave was knocked out of the game midway through the second quarter with a collarbone injury. X-rays taken at halftime were negative, but he did not return.

Musgrave, who completed only four of 10 passes for 29 yards with one interception, also aggravated a shoulder injury when he was hit in the second quarter.

“It was one of those hits that you take every game, but my shoulder wasn’t ready for that today,” said the Oregon quarterback. “(The injury) just got to where I couldn’t function very well.”

The Bears gained 213 yards and scored three times on their first 15 plays from scrimmage and outgained Oregon, 280 yards to 47, in the first quarter.

“Cal obviously jumped off to a great start,” Oregon Coach Rich Brooks said. “They made big plays in the first quarter. They jumped off to a 21-zip lead and we had a heck of a time coming back.”

The Bears jumped to a 21-3 lead in the opening 10:11. Wallace scored on a six-yard, off-tackle run and a 63-yard draw play up the middle before Cal took a 21-3 lead on a flea-flicker play.

Russell White swept right, and handed off to receiver Sean Dawkins coming back around. Dawkins pitched the ball back to Pawlawski, who threw to Brian Treggs wide open behind the Duck defense for a 47-yard touchdown.

Cal’s final score came on a 19-yard pass from Pawlawski to Dawkins in the third quarter.
