Medicine Man, an Andrews 56 sailed by Robert Lane of the Long Beach Yacht Club, swept past the larger ULDB 70s and was about to overtake Charles Kushell’s Vamp for the overall lead in the Los Angeles Yacht Club’s race to Cabo San Lucas.
Vamp, a Tripp 36, started a day earlier with the smaller boats and was reported to be 358 miles out, having completed about one-third of the race, as the fleet approached the turning mark of Guadalupe Island off the Mexican coast.
