Country singer Naomi Judd says that when she saw a motorcyclist skidding out of control, the nurse in her came out.

So the mother in the award-winning country music duo the Judds cared for Gary K. Hanner, 27, until an ambulance reached the accident scene Tuesday night.

“She looked over him, and when the ambulance arrived on the scene, she gave the paramedics an assessment of the patient,” said Bruce Murphy, dispatcher for the Metro Nashville Fire Department’s ambulance service. “They said it was real good; she was real helpful.”

Hanner was treated at Vanderbilt University Medical Center for bruises and abrasions.

Naomi, 44, who retired from singing last month for health reasons, said she has kept her nursing certification current in the seven years she performed with daughter Wynonna, 26.

“Once a nurse, always a nurse,” she told reporters at the scene.

The Judds have won three Grammy awards. In October, they were voted the Country Music Assn.’s duo of the year for the third straight year.
