Three From UCSD Get All-American Honors

Three UC San Diego players were named to the Division II All-American teams by the American Volleyball Coaches Assn. it was announced Thursday at the championship banquet at Washington University in St. Louis.

Juniors Elizabeth Tan, a middle blocker, and Vikki Van Duyne, outside hitter, were selected to the first team. Dana Simone, junior outside hitter, was named to the second team. This is the first time Van Duyne and Simone have been selected. Tan joined five others as repeats.

UCSD (35-8) will play the College of St. Benedict (Minn.) tonight. Host and defending champion Washington then will play Juniata, Pa.

U.S. International defeated host Cal State Dominguez Hills 15-3, 15-8, 15-12. April Devine led USIU (12-22) with 11 kills. Heather Kelley and Stephanie Milbradt each added 10 for USIU.

BASEBALL

Padre reliever John Davis, after being notified that he’ll be left off the 40-man roster, signed a one-year contract with the Atlanta Braves, according to his agent, Dennis Gilbert. Davis was 0-1 with a 5.79 earned-run average in six appearances with the Padres.

In other news, Denny Sommers accepted the Padres’ offer to be the club’s advance scout. He had been the bullpen coach the past three years before being demoted a week ago. Also, Jack Maloof, formerly the Padres’ hitting coach, decided to stay in the organization as the double-A hitting coach at Wichita.

Two of the more prominent members of the 31 front-office employees and coaches who were fired by the Padres have obtained jobs. Dick Hager, formerly the advance scout, was hired in the same capacity with the Houston Astros. Harry Dunlop, formerly director of minor league instruction, was hired on the Milwaukee Brewers’ minor league staff.
