SPORTS ON WEEKEND TV

Share

USC-UCLA football tops the sports television viewing choices on a weekend that also includes a matchup between the Raiders pursuers in the National Football League’s AFC West.

Although lacking its usual Rose Bowl implications, there should be no shortage of intensity and interest when No. 19 USC meets UCLA at 12:30 p.m. today on Channels 7, 3, 10 and 42. This is the 20th time in the past 25 years that ABC has carried the game. Keith Jackson and Bob Griese call the action from the Rose Bowl.

The USC-UCLA game is not today’s only matchup of traditional rivals. Copper Bowl-bound California faces Stanford in “The Big Game” to be televised by Prime Ticket beginning at 3:30 p.m.

Elsewhere in college football, No. 1 Notre Dame, USC’s opponent next Saturday, takes on No. 18 Penn State at 1 p.m. on ESPN. SportsChannel airs a replay at 8:30 p.m.

In other telecasts involving teams ranked in the Top 25 by the Associated Press, No. 7 Texas seeks to avoid a letdown after its upset of previously undefeated Houston when it faces Texas Christian (9 a.m., Channels 2 and 8); No. 16 Michigan plays host to Minnesota (9:30 a.m., ESPN); barred by probation from the Southeastern Conference championship, No. 6 Florida continues its quest for the SEC’s best record against Kentucky (9:30 a.m., TBS); No. 14 Tennessee and No. 15 Mississippi meet at Memphis’ Liberty Bowl to help determine the SEC’s Sugar Bowl representative (12:30 p.m., Channels 2 and 8); another SEC game matches No. 24 Auburn and Georgia (4:30 p.m. ESPN.)

Although the Raiders are off until Monday night, there is still a telecast Sunday to interest their fans. The AFC West’s second- and third-place teams, the Kansas City Chiefs (5-4) and San Diego Chargers (5-5), can be seen on Channels 4, 36 and 39 beginning at 10 a.m.

A bit of NFL history could be made in the San Francisco 49ers-Tampa Bay Buccaneers game (1 p.m., Channels 2 and 8). A 49ers win would be their 18th in a row, including playoffs, tying the record held by the Chicago Bears (1933-34 and 1941-42) and the Miami Dolphins (1972-73).

Other NFL telecasts feature the New York Giants (9-0) and Detroit Lions (3-6) (10 a.m., Channel 8) and Pittsburgh Steelers (5-4) and Cincinnati Bengals (5-4) (5 p.m., ESPN).

Both the Lakers and the Kings are on television this weekend. The Pittsburgh Penguins provide the opposition for the Kings tonight (7:30 p.m., Prime Ticket) and the Golden State Warriors do the same for the Lakers Sunday (7:30 p.m., Prime Ticket).
