Novel Killed as Too Gory Gets Another Publisher

Vintage books announced Friday that it has acquired publication rights to “American Psycho,” a lurid Bret Easton Ellis novel that was canceled Wednesday by its original publisher, Simon & Schuster.

Vintage said in New York that it would publish the novel as a paperback next year.

The cancellation of the novel, which contains gory depictions of violence against women, created a furor in the book publishing world. Ellis, the best-selling author of “Less Than Zero” and “Rules of Attraction,” said Friday that the idea of publishing “American Psycho” as a paperback was “brilliant” because it will put the book on store shelves soon after the original January publication date.
