COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Chapman’s Balanced Attack Too Much for Chico, 103-80
Chapman College opened its men’s basketball season the same way it did last year.
The opponent--Cal State Chico--was the same as was the result--a Chapman victory at the Hutton Center.
But those were the only similarities.
Instead of relying on one man, the Panthers used a balanced attack to defeat Chico, 103-80. Last year, Chapman’s Rog Middleton dominated with 36 points and 18 rebounds in an 80-79 victory.
Middleton led the Panthers (1-0) Friday night with 23 points. But Panther forwards Frantz Reyes (17 points), Alan Schlines (eight) and Zlatko Josic (seven) helped Middleton inside.
Chapman’s guards, a weak spot last season, also played well. Guards Andre Hill and Chris Martin scored 15 and eight points and Al Jackson had 14.
Eleven of the 13 Panthers who played scored as Chapman Coach Bob Boyd cleared his bench. Chapman shot 67% from the field in the game.
Chapman built a 10-point lead at halftime, sparked by a 14-4 run midway through the first half. Middleton scored six points and Reyes scored four during the spurt, which gave the Panthers a 34-22 lead.
Chico never challenged in the second half as Chapman steadily pulled away.
Mark Raspberry scored 19 points before fouling out with 8 minutes 16 seconds remaining in the game. Jake Hodges added 14 points for Chico (0-1).
