Unbeaten Serra Rallies to Outlast Trabuco Hills

Despite 336 passing yards from sophomore Pat Barnes, Trabuco Hills lost to Gardena Serra, 34-21, Friday in the first round of the Division VII playoffs.

Serra, coached by former Servite Coach Leo Hand, won its ninth game of the season and its 23rd over two years.

The division’s top-seeded team was led by running back Jerald Henry’s 344 yards and three touchdowns in 21 carries.

Serra, which advances to meet La Mirada next weekend, took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on two touchdown runs by Henry, the first a 76-yarder on the game’s first play from scrimmage. The Mustangs (4-6-1) cut the lead in half on an eight-yard touchdown pass from Barnes to Jeff Clayton early in the second quarter.

After the Cavaliers extended their advantage to 20-7, Trabuco Hills got touchdowns from Ben Rooker (4-yard run) and Julian Bond (32-yard pass from Barnes) to take a 21-20 lead with 9:14 to go in the third quarter.
