Ty Detmer, who passed for 451 yards in a 45-22 victory over Utah, became the first junior to surpass 10,000 passing yards. The fifth quarterback in major-college history to reach that level, his 10,106 total trails leader Todd Santos of San Diego State by 1,319 yards with two games and another season to go. Detmer extended to 22 his NCAA-record of consecutive 300-yard games.

Linzy Collins caught nine passes for a Big Eight-record 229 yards in Missouri’s 31-21 victory over Kansas. Collins set a Missouri season record with 56 catches, breaking the mark of 49 by Herbert Johnson in 1985. His 229 yards broke the one-game school mark of 193 he set last year against Kansas and the Big Eight standard of 222.

Freshman Natrone Means’ 256 rushing yards in North Carolina’s 24-22 victory over Duke was the best total in the Atlantic Coast Conference this season. The victory helped the Tar Heels to a dramatic turnaround; after two consecutive 1-10 seasons, they finished this year 6-4-1.

Brown’s Mike Geroux caught 14 passes in a 17-0 victory over Columbia to give him a school record of 109 in his career.

Georgia Tech’s 42-7 victory over Wake Forest gave it the ACC championship and a trip to the Citrus Bowl. It was the Yellow Jackets’ first conference title since 1952, the year they had their last undefeated season as the Southeastern Conference champion. The victory also made Bobby Ross the first coach to win titles at two ACC schools. Ross won three titles at Maryland from 1983 through 1985.

Illinois’ Howard Griffith rushed for 128 yards and two touchdowns to tie Red Grange’s school record of 31 career touchdowns in a 24-10 victory over Indiana.

Rice, after scoring on a desperation pass with 1:03 remaining, failed on a two-point conversion attempt that left the Owls with a 17-16 loss to Baylor and ended hopes of their first winning season since 1963.

Peter Gardere’s four touchdown passes in Texas’ 38-10 victory over TCU tied a single-game school record shared by three other players.

Robert Smith set an Ohio State freshman rushing record in a 35-10 victory over Wisconsin. His 171 yards give him 1,021 for the season, breaking the mark of 867 set by Archie Griffin in 1972. Wisconsin tied a school record set in 1968 with its 12th consecutive Big Ten Conference loss.

In the 100th game in Romney Stadium at Logan, Utah, Pacific’s Troy Kopp tied a stadium record with six touchdown passes and set a stadium record for pass attempts with 61. He completed 34 for 515 yards, but Utah State won, 51-45.

Oregon’s 6-3 victory over Oregon State gave the Ducks eight victories for the first time since 1959.

BOTTOM’S UP

Things can’t get much worse for the Cal State Fullerton football program. The Titans, entering their game against New Mexico State, were 1-10 and ranked 105th in the country among Division I-A teams by The National, an all-sports publication; the Aggies were 0-10, riding an NCAA-leading 27-game losing streak and ranked last, No. 106. New Mexico State won, 43-9, leaving Fullerton’s losing streak at 11 games, now the longest in the country. Said New Mexico State Coach Jim Hess: “It was a tremendous burden every time we read in the paper that we had the longest losing streak. It feels very good to pass that on to someone else.”

Texas Coach David McWilliams, on quarterback Peter Gardere, who threw four touchdown passes after a poor start in 38-10 victory over TCU: “Peter wasn’t sharp, but he always comes back. He never gives up on himself, and we don’t give up on him.”

Maryland Coach Joe Krivac, after the Terrapins defeated No. 8 Virginia, 35-30: “If there’s anybody out there who’s still looking for a bowl team, tell them we’re ready and willing to go. . . . We’ll take anything that comes our way. We’re not picky.”

Eastern Michigan Coach Dick Zornes, after an 84-21 loss to Houston in which David Klingler threw 11 touchdown passes: “They’ve got great athletes and they leave them in from the beginning to the end. That’s him (Houston Coach John Jenkins ). Some day, he’ll be on the other end of the broom.”

Said Jenkins: “We go at everyone with the same tempo, the 49ers or St. Mary’s Cathedral. David deserves to get his reps. I’m not going to take him out at the half. National records had nothing to do with it.”

STREAKS

Texas’ 38-10 victory over Texas Christian was the Longhorns’ 23rd in a row over the Horned Frogs. The loss was TCU’s fourth in a row.

Florida State’s Lawrence Dawsey, who caught eight passes for 133 yards against Memphis State, has caught a pass in 31 consecutive games.

Mississippi State ended an 11-game losing streak in the Southeastern Conference with a 34-22 victory over Louisiana State.

Colorado won its ninth consecutive game, 64-3 over Kansas, and clinched the Big Eight Conference title for the second season in a row. Colorado’s 64 points were the most it has scored at Folsom Field in Boulder.

New Mexico’s 40-34 loss to San Diego State was the Lobos’ sixth in a row. It is the fourth consecutive season New Mexico has had at least 10 losses.

Southern Methodist extended its school-record losing streak to nine in a 62-7 loss to Texas Tech.

Texas A&M;’s 20-16 victory over Arkansas extended the Razorbacks’ losing streak to seven games for the first time in a season.

San Diego State’s Patrick Rowe, who caught six passes for 131 yards against New Mexico, set a school record with his seventh consecutive game with at least 100 receiving yards.

Miami’s Carlos Huerta was perfect on six extra-point attempts to increase his streak without a miss to an NCAA record-tying 135.

Todd Marinovich’s 23-yard pass play to Johnnie Morton with 16 seconds left gave USC a 45-42 victory over UCLA. . . .Craig Fayak’s 34-yard field goal with eight seconds left gave No. 18 Penn State a 24-21 victory over top-ranked Notre Dame. . . .Scott Whittier sacked Virginia quarterback Shawn Moore on fourth down after the Cavaliers had driven to the Maryland two-yard line with 1:41 remaining in the game, ensuring the Terrapins’ 35-30 victory. . . .Navy quarterback Alton Grizzard threw a fourth-down, five yard scoring pass to David Berghult with 51 seconds left to give the Midshipmen a 31-27 victory over Delaware.

DELAY OF GAME

Police evacuated part of Martin Stadium in Pullman, Wash., to remove an explosive device, delaying the start of the game between Washington and Washington State by half an hour. The device, which was disarmed without incident, would have caused little more than a loud boom and a flash without much potential for injury, said Dave Wareing, Washington State campus police chief. “At this point, we hope we’re looking at a prank,” he said.

Virginia’s Shawn Moore will be sidelined three weeks after having surgery on his right thumb, dislocated against Maryland. . . .Rice quarterback Donald Hollas suffered possible ligament damage in his left knee in a loss to Baylor.
