Detroit Red Wing Coach Bryan Murray is beginning to think he taught his younger brother, Terry, too much about coaching.

Coach Terry Murray’s Washington Capitals got a goal from John Druce at 2:31 of overtime Monday night for a 3-2 victory over the Red Wings at Detroit.

“I get very excited coaching against him,” said Terry. “We’re both very competitive people, so I’m sure he wants to beat me as much as I want to beat him. Bryan was my mentor and I want to prove he taught me a few things.”

Terry Murray has a 2-0 record against his brother this season. The Capitals beat Detroit, 6-4, when the teams played in Landover, Md., Oct. 6.

It was more than sibling rivalry, however, that made the victory a sweet one for the Washington coach.

“We’d lost five straight and we had to have a solid performance to get things turned around,” Terry Murray said.

The Capitals got a brilliant performance from rookie goaltender Jim Hrivnak, who made 41 saves to post his second victory of the season.

Montreal 5, Quebec 2--The Nordiques’ winless streak reached 14 in the loss to the Canadiens at Quebec.

Guy Carbonneau led the Canadiens with two goals.

During the team’s previous record winless streak, set last year, the Nordiques lost 10 games and tied four. The 14-game streak also is three shy of the NHL’s record winless streak of 17 set by the 1974-75 Washington Capitals.

The Canadiens, ending a four-game road trip, also got goals from Stephan Lebeau, Tom Chorske and Mathieu Schneider.

Decimated by injuries entering the game, the Canadiens added two more when defenseman Peter Svoboda did not return to action after injuring his wrist in the first period and right wing Stephane Richer suffered a hip injury.

New York Rangers 2, Minnesota 2--Bobby Smith scored the tying goal with 1:26 gone in the third period to help the North Stars gain a tie at New York.

Smith tucked Brian Propp’s centering pass behind Ranger goaltender Mike Richter, who stopped 41 shots in the game. Brian Hayward made 35 saves for Minnesota (4-13-5), which ended a four-game losing streak.

Darren Turcotte had two power-play goals for the Rangers. Propp had the other Minnesota goal.

With the tie, the Rangers (15-6-3) extended their unbeaten streak to 4-0-3.

Boston 5, Toronto 2--Dave Christian scored two goals to lead the Bruins past the struggling Maple Leafs at Toronto.

Garry Galley, Chris Nilan and Cam Neely also scored for the Bruins (12-6-4), leaders of the Adams Division.

Rob Ramage and Al Iafrate scored for Toronto (4-18-1), last in the Norris Division.

Toronto outshot Boston, 33-26, including 13-6 in the third period.

Calgary 6, Vancouver 4--Tim Sweeney scored on a breakaway in the third period to break a 4-4 tie and lead the Flames past the Canucks at Vancouver.

Sergei Makarov sealed the victory when he scored his second goal of the game at 11:10 and the Flames pulled within one point of the leading Kings in the Smythe Division.

Robert Reichel, Joe Nieuwendyk and Theoren Fleury scored the other Calgary goals against Canuck goaltender Kirk McLean.

The Canucks (10-11) got goals from Igor Larionov, Robert Kron, Jyrke Lumme and Garth Butcher on goaltender Mike Vernon.

Calgary’s power play clicked three times in four opportunities as special teams proved to be the difference. Vancouver was 2-5 with the man advantage.
