THE SIDELINES : Soviets Upset Italy in Volleyball

TOKYO —
The Soviet Union survived a match point and rallied to upset world champion Italy 8-15, 11-15, 16-14, 15-12, 15-13 today in the championship of the World Top Four volleyball tournament.
Italy led 14-7 in the third set, but the Soviets reeled off the next nine points. At 14-14, the Soviets went ahead with Yuri Cherednik’s block and took the game when Andrea Giani’s shot went wide.
Cuba beat Japan 15-8, 16-14, 15-5 in the third-place match.
