NOTEBOOK / GARY KLEIN : Bowl Game Pairs Glendale, Citrus

The Glendale College football team, winner of eight consecutive games and the Western State Conference Northern Division championship, will play Foothill Conference champion Citrus in the Southern California Bowl on Dec. 7 in Glendora.

Glendale defeated Santa Barbara, 48-21, last Saturday to clinch the division championship and an automatic berth in the Western State Conference Bowl, in which the Vaqueros (8-2) could have played Santa Monica. Instead, Vaquero Coach John Cicuto opted to play Citrus (8-2).

“I think it will be a good matchup because we’re kind of close to each other location-wise and the game should get some interest,” Cicuto said.

Moorpark (8-2) will play Santa Monica (8-2) in the WSC Bowl.

Record breaker: Glendale College running back Bobby Webster gained 125 yards against Santa Barbara to set a school record for single-season rushing yardage.

Webster finished with 1,360 yards, eclipsing the record of 1,343 set by Henry Longoria in 1975.

Webster also set single-season records for touchdowns (22) and rushing touchdowns (21).

Honor roll: Occidental running back Brian Madlangbayan was one of six Tiger players named to the All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference team by a vote of the league’s coaches.

Offensive lineman Peter Tucker, defensive lineman Brady Dargan, defensive back Rick Mock, linebacker Larry Schatz and kicker Mark Collinsworth also were named to the first team.

On the road: The Ribet Academy basketball team will spend part of Thanksgiving Day visiting the patients and staff at the Montrose Convalescent Hospital.

“I think it’s important for kids to learn to be thankful for what they have,” Ribet Coach Mike Miller said. “We’re going to go there and spend some time helping out and just visiting. I think it’s important for the personal growth of our players.”

Post-mortem: Glendale High football Coach Don Shoemaker offered no lengthy explanations for the previously unbeaten Dynamiters’ 33-8 loss to Camarillo in the first round of the Southern Section Division II playoffs.

“We just picked the wrong game to play a bad half,” Shoemaker said.

Indeed, Camarillo (8-3), the fourth-place team from the Marmonte League, returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. The Scorpions then scored on a 77-yard run by Fahali Campbell en route to a 33-0 halftime lead over Glendale (10-1).

“We still thought we could come back (after trailing, 14-0),” Shoemaker said. “It just started snowballing.”

St. Francis (7-4) also suffered a first-round defeat, losing to Glenn, 40-19, in a Division VII game.

In the running: Four area cross-country runners qualified for the state high school meet in the Southern Section finals last weekend at Mt. San Antonio College.

Sarah Dien and Carlene Pengra of La Canada placed fourth and fifth in the girls’ Division III race in 19 minutes 26 seconds and 19:27.

Also advancing were Hoover’s Margarito Casillas (15:56), who placed sixth in the boys’ Division I race, and St Francis’ Froylan Sanchez (16:13), who placed sixth in Division III.

The state meet will be held Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno.

City champion: The Marshall High girls’ volleyball team won the school’s first City Section 3-A title last weekend with a 15-12, 16-14, 15-1 sweep of Sylmar.

The top-seeded Barristers (8-5), under Coach Wendy Triplett, defeated Sylmar (15-2) for the third time this season.
