NHL ROUNDUP : Flyers Score 5 Goals in a Row to Beat Penguins; Peeters Hurt

After spotting the Penguins an early 2-0 lead Wednesday night at Pittsburgh, the Philadelphia Flyers stormed back for five consecutive goals and hung on for a 5-4 victory.

It might have been a costly win for the Flyers, trying to move into contention in the Patrick Division. They lost goaltender Pete Peeters, who had been playing well, early in the final period.

Peeters, who stopped 23 of 25 shots, was sent crashing to the ice when Kevin Stevens was tripped and banged into him. Peeters suffered a concussion.

The Flyers were leading, 5-2, but rookie Bruce Hoffort gave up goals to John Cullen and Phil Bourque. There were almost three minutes left when Bourque cut the lead to a goal, but the Penguins couldn’t get the tying score.

Pelle Eklund sparked the Flyers’ comeback, getting two of the goals.

Quebec 4, Hartford 4--The Nordiques’ winless streak reached 15, but for a team in a slump, a tie is much better than a defeat.

Tony McKegney scored his eighth goal with just under two minutes left in regulation to give the Nordiques the tie. The Nordiques had lost 14 games in a row.

Washington 5, Toronto 3--John Druce scored two of the Capitals’ three power-play goals at Landover, Md., to keep Toronto winless on the road. Toronto is 0-9-0 on the road this season.

Buffalo 5, New York Rangers 5--Alexander Mogilny and Dave Andreychuk scored 18 seconds apart in the third period at Buffalo to spark the Sabres’ comeback.

The Rangers built a 4-1 lead early in the second period, but had to settle for the tie that extended their unbeaten streak to eight games (4-0-4).

Detroit 4, Minnesota 3--Johan Garpenlov scored his fifth goal of the season midway through the third period at Detroit and the Red Wings extended the North Stars’ winless streak to six games (0-5-1).

Vancouver 4, Chicago 1--Rookie goaltender Troy Gamble stopped 24 shots before he was injured in the second period, leading the Canucks at Vancouver. Gamble left with an apparent hip injury at 13:07 of the second period.
