CS Northridge Debuts in Division I at a Record, but Unsuccessful Pace
The helter-skelter system Cal State Northridge copied from Loyola Marymount Coach Paul Westhead went over about as well in the Matadors’ Division I debut as it has for Westhead’s 1-10 Denver Nuggets.
It brought Northridge an NCAA-record 44 three-point shots in its first Division I game--the record was 39, set on March 13, 1988, by Loyola Marymount--but the Matadors gave up 18 consecutive points in one stretch before losing to Colorado, 113-89, before 3,519 Friday night at Coors Events Center.

The Times erroneously reported that Cal State Northridge set an NCAA record with 44 three-point attempts against Colorado on Friday night. The record is 53, set by Kentucky against Southwestern Louisiana on Dec. 23, 1989.
Kyle Kerlegan made a Coors Events Center record 10 three-point shots on 21 attempts for Northridge. Kerlegan also set school records in both categories, as did the Matadors as a team with 16 three-pointers made on 44 attempts. Kerlegan led Northridge with 30 points. Steve Wise had 29 for Colorado.
