PRO FOOTBALL REPORT / WEEKDAY UPDATE : RAIDERS : Running Game Returns Against Chiefs

Share

After amassing 177 yards rushing in Monday’s 13-10 victory at Miami, the Raiders probably will continue to emphasize their running game Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs.

In an effort to exploit a perceived weakness in the Chiefs’ secondary, the Raiders threw 31 passes in a 9-7 loss at Kansas City three weeks ago, but quarterback Jay Schroeder completed only 10 of them for 138 yards and threw an interception. His receivers dropped four passes and fumbled once after a reception. The Raiders ran only 26 times for 96 yards against the Chiefs.

Although tailback Barry Word has out-rushed starter Christian Okoye in the Chiefs’ last three games, 196 yards to 169, Kansas City Coach Marty Schottenheimer doesn’t plan to start Word Sunday.

Word had 90 yards in 17 carries in last week’s 27-10 victory over San Diego, and Okoye had only 43 yards in 15 carries.

Injury report: Raider safety Eddie Anderson, who has a pulled thigh muscle, probably will play against the Chiefs.
