MISSION VIEJO : UCSD, Saddleback Agree on Transfers

Share

Saddleback College has reached an agreement with UC San Diego guaranteeing that students who pass all classes with a grade of C or better will be allowed to transfer to the university.

Saddleback students will not be guaranteed their choice of major at UC San Diego, however. Because UC San Diego has too many computer science and electrical engineering majors, Saddleback students who wish to major in those areas will have to compete for openings with the university’s current students.

Saddleback is the first Orange County community college to reach such an agreement with UC San Diego, officials said. Saddleback has similar agreements with UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, Cal State Fullerton and Chapman College.

Everett Scott, Saddleback’s vice president for instruction, said the agreement was reached because UC San Diego, like many public four-year universities, has more high school students applying to it than it can accept.

By diverting more students to the community colleges for their freshman and sophomore years, the university can ease overcrowding in such basic courses as freshman English, which all students must take.
