Castle Park’s Murguia Signs With Aztecs

Castle Park High senior Christina Murguia and Michelle Suman of Golden, Colo., have signed national letters of intent to play for San Diego State’s women’s basketball team, Coach Beth Burns announced Tuesday.

Murguia, a 6-foot-1 forward, averaged 29 points and 18 rebounds as a junior, and led the Trojans to three consecutive Metro Conference titles. She was Metro Player of the Year and San Diego Section runner-up last year and was a Times’ All-County first team selection as a junior.

Freshman Christy Stevens scored 24 points to lead Point Loma Nazarene to a 90-51 nonconference victory over Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks.

TENNIS

Brenda and Butch Stillman of Encinitas pushed Sausalito’s Rosie Casals and Mill Valley’s Gordon Smith for two hours before losing, 7-6 (7-2), 1-6, 6-2 in the mixed doubles segment of the National Hardcourt Championships at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.

In the women’s 40 singles, Liz Harper of La Jolla was turned back, 6-0, 6-2, by No. 8 Judy Louie of Corona del Mar.

In the men’s Beach Club Championships, La Jolla’s No. 6, Mike Rabbitt, was ousted by Charlie Marold of Glen Ellyn, Ill., 6-3, 6-1, in the 45 singles.

Top-seeded Joe McDonough advanced to the third round of the 13th San Diego All-College Tournament at USD with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Andres Arecco of Palomar College. No. 2 Kerry Safdie of San Diego State defeated UC San Diego’s Steven Mih, 7-5, 6-1.

BASEBALL

Former Padre third base coach Sandy Alomar has joined the Chicago Cubs as a minor league instructor. Alomar, 47, will serve as Latin coordinator of minor league instruction. He spent the last five seasons with the Padres.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Grossmont College advanced to the State Championship Tournament with a three-game sweep of L.A. Pierce in the Southern California Community College Playoffs at Grossmont College.
