A sprinkler system doused an eighth-floor fire and prevented wider damage Wednesday at the Hazard Center in Mission Valley, authorities said.

Two painters working in the building were injured, fire officials said.

The fire began when highly flammable lacquer being used by the workmen ignited for reasons that are still under investigation, the fire department said. The heat set off the sprinkler system.

The blaze was extinguished by the time firefighters arrived at 6:11 p.m., authorities said.

One workman, identified only as a 25-year-old man, received second-degree burns on his right leg, while the other, a 36-year-old man, suffered inhalation burns. Both were taken to UC San Diego Medical Center, where they were treated and released, a spokesman said.
