Students at San Marino Elementary School held a jog-a-thon this month to raise money for field trips and new physical education equipment.

The students, ranging from preschoolers through sixth-graders, solicited sponsorships from residents in what is becoming a tradition at the school. Last spring, more than $8,000 was collected in a jog-a-thon to benefit a student with leukemia.

“It is for the spirit of the school,” said teacher Jeanine Rossi, who organized the event. The students enjoy the jog-a-thon, she said, adding that some practice for weeks before the event.

About 460 students ran laps around the school field. Both regular education and special-education students participated. Although the school won’t know how much money the jog-a-thon raised until next week, Rossi said the money is already spoken for.

“We are in desperate need of physical education equipment,” she said.

A special assembly will be held Friday for the joggers.
