A 31,500-gallon sewage spill, flowing at the rate of 50 gallons per minute, was contained early Thursday in Del Cerro, authorities said.

The spill, which began in the 6300 block of Alvarado Court about 6 p.m. Wednesday, overflowed a manhole and seeped into a canyon before entering the San Diego River at Camino del Rio North and Fairmount Avenue.

Although it isn’t known how much sewage entered the river, precautionary signs were placed at Dog Beach, where the river flows into the ocean, said Gary Stephany, deputy director of Environmental Health Services for San Diego County.

Stephany said signs will remain at Dog Beach until sampling confirms that the water is safe for recreational use.
