Tuxedo-Clad Gunmen Rob Encino Bank

Share

Three gunmen dressed in tuxedos robbed an Encino bank Friday afternoon and one accidentally shot himself in the hand while grabbing a bag of cash from a frightened teller, Los Angeles police said.

A security device in the money bag may have exploded as the men fled, staining their clothes and skin red, officers said.

The robbers, armed with handguns, entered the Independence Bank branch in the 15000 block of Ventura Boulevard at 3:35 p.m., Sgt. Jim Grayson said. “One of the tellers froze and panicked,” Grayson said, and the robber “yelled profanities, demanding that she give him the money.”

As he reached behind the counter for a money bag, he accidentally shot himself in the hand, Grayson said.

The robbers, described as black, ages 25 to 35, fled in a waiting vehicle. Police would not say how much money was taken.
