SANTA ANA — An officer trying to break up a disturbance outside a restaurant shot and injured one of the men involved during a confrontation Sunday evening, police said.
Details of the incident were sketchy late Sunday, and police did not release the name or condition of the man injured in the altercation.
Santa Ana police said the uniformed officer, who was not immediately identified, was on a meal break at Lucky Guy’s Burgers on the 400 block of South Main Street around 7:30 p.m. when employees there alerted him to a disturbance outside.
The officer intervened, said watch commander Sgt. Dave Nick, “and one thing led to another and it ended up in a shooting. The officer was assaulted and that’s what led to the shooting.” Nick said he did not know whether the person hit was carrying a gun.
Another man at the scene who might have been involved in the altercation was taken into custody for questioning, Nick said.
