Departing Simi Valley Unified School District board members received resolutions and kudos Tuesday night honoring them for a collective three decades as elected officials.

The meeting marked the final board appearances of board President Helen Beebe and Lew Roth. Beebe, 67, who is retiring after nearly nine years on the panel, was given a resolution crediting her with helping to modernize curriculum, improve technological learning and increase graduation requirements.

Roth, 57, who was defeated in November’s election after 22 years on the board, received a resolution citing his efforts to develop a policy requiring a C or better average for students participating in extracurricular activities, in addition to spearheading the Simi Valley Education Foundation and aiding with district participation in Simi Valley Community Development Agency funding.

“I’m not sad, because I’m ready,” Beebe said. “There’s only so much I can do. It’s time we got parents of kids on the board.”

Roth said, “It’s probably been the most incredible experience of my life. The greatest reward has been seeing the accomplishments of the kids.”

Each received commendations from various city, county and state officials.

Board members-elect Carla Kurachi and Doug Crosse will take the oath of office at the board’s meeting Dec. 18.
