ly Mitchum of North Carolina State shot a 1-under-par 71 today for a 12-stroke victory over Japan’s Jim Murakami as the United States took seven of 12 second-round matches to tie the overall score 18-18 in the JAL NCAA-Japan Collegiate Golf Championship.

Each match victory is worth two points and each team receives one point for a draw. Japan led 8-4 after Tuesday’s first-round doubles matches. In today’s singles competition on the 7,052-yard Narashino Country club course, the American and Japanese men each won four matches. The U.S. women won four matches and lost one to Japan. The women played on a 6,532-yard layout.

The United States leads Japan 13-2 in the series, begun in 1975.
