Russell Maryland, the anchor of the University of Miami’s outstanding defensive line for four years, today was named the winner of the Outland Trophy as college football’s top interior lineman.

Colorado offensive guard Joe Garten and Clemson offensive tackle Stacy Long were the other finalists in the voting by the Football Writers Assn. of America.

Maryland, a 6-foot-2, 273-pound tackle from Chicago, had 96 tackles and 10 1/2 quarterback sacks for the Hurricanes this season.

He had 270 tackles and 20 1/2 sacks during his four years at Miami as the Hurricanes had a 43-4 record during that span, including 9-2 this year.

A fifth-year senior, Maryland chose to remain at Miami rather than turn pro when he was eligible last spring. He is considered among the top five prospects for the 1991 National Football League draft.

Maryland, who was named today to the Associated Press All America team, said he has no regrets about passing up the NFL for a final year of college play, particularly since receiving the Outland Trophy.

“It’s all worth it,” he said of remaining in college. “This is what college football is all about.”

Maryland will conclude his college career when the Hurricanes play Texas in the Cotton Bowl.

In another football honor, Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer of Brigham Young, and runner-up Raghib (Rocket) Ismail of Notre Dame headed the Associated Press All-America football team named today.

Ismail and Detmer, both juniors, are joined by three other underclassmen: Virginia wide receiver Herman Moore, Auburn offensive guard Ed King and Georgia Tech defensive back Ken Swilling.
