FULLERTON : Grant Will Finance Medi-Cal Survey

Cal State Fullerton’s Social Science Research Center has received a $200,000 contract to explore opinions and misconceptions about Medi-Cal in an effort to improve the image of the state’s health care system for the elderly and needy.

The state Department of Health Services awarded the contract in hopes of determining how Medi-Cal beneficiaries and others feel about the much-criticized health care program, university officials said.

Beginning this month, 1,500 recipients will be surveyed by telephone, and in-person interviews will be conducted with eligibility workers and welfare rights advocates, according to center director Richard T. Serpe.

David B. Sachsman, the university’s dean of communications, will lead the inquiry, together with Serpe, Prof. Rae R. Newton, chair of the sociology department, and communications professor Edgar P. Trotter.

The investigators will then draft a report for state health officials detailing the types of care people are seeking and their opinions about Medi-Cal.
