Benjamin L. Reid, 72, author and literary critic, who won the 1969 Pulitzer Prize for biography. Reid, who taught English at Mt. Holyoke College in Massachusetts for 26 years before his retirement in 1983, was the author of two biographies, including “The Man From New York: John Quinn and His Friends,” which won the 1969 Pulitzer Prize. (Quinn was a prominent New York attorney who in the 1920s owned the largest single collection of modern European paintings in the world.) Reid also wrote a volume of memoirs and dozens of essays and poems. Reid’s most recent book, “Necessary Lives,” published earlier this year, was a collection of nine essays on various authors.
