The Padres have hired Tom Ryba as their director of marketing and promotions. Ryba, 37, has been with the Padres since December of 1985. He has worked in the broadcast department in advertising sales and client merchandising since October 1986.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Christian Heritage (2-6) concluded an eight-game road trip losing to Southern Cal College, 85-59. Christian Heritage trailed by only four (26-22) at halftime. Vernaldo Butler, a junior transfer from Grossmont College, scored 25 points and had 12 rebounds. Teammate Jeff Martin and Lance Roark each added nine points. Bryan Moore scored 19 points for SCC (7-2).

TENNIS

Del Mar’s Bob Seymour and San Diego’s Virginia Glass won matches to advance on the second day of the Senior Grand Prix Masters Tennis Championships at Rancho Bernardo Inn.

Seymour defeated Stan Potts of San Diego, 6-2, 6-0 and Glass teamed with Fran Wakefield of Bonita to defeat Peggy Howell of Palos Verdes Estates and Marilyn Prigge of Buena Park, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.

HORSE RACING

The Del Mar race track next season will introduce a stakes race with a $1 million purse, the biggest in the track’s 52-year history.

The race, a mile and a quarter run for 3 year olds and up, will take place Aug. 10. Three year olds will be required to carry 116 pounds, older horses 124.

The winner will earn $550,000, second place $200,000, third $150,000, fourth $75,000 and fifth $25,000.
