COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Fullerton Downs Sacramento; Riley Gets 500th

Colleen Riley, in her 22nd season as women’s basketball coach at Fullerton College, got her 500th victory Wednesday when the Hornets defeated Sacramento City, 80-68, in the first round of the College of the Sequoias Tournament in Visalia.

Riley is the first community college women’s coach in the nation to reach the 500 mark.

“I’m really glad it’s over,” Riley said. “The team did some really nice things; when I turned around, all the fans and the players had T-shirts saying ‘Riley wins 500.’ ”

“Actually, I’m really glad we won it, but I’m most happy that we’re 8-0 and moving on in the tournament.”

The victory came with ease. Fullerton led, 43-29, at halftime and increased the lead to as many as 26 in the second half. Nikki Durity led Fullerton with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Vicki Evans added 14 points, Kris Kelly 12 and Christa Ramirez eight points and eight assists.

Fullerton is 8-0, improving Riley’s record is 500-93.

In another College of the Sequoias tournament game:

Golden West 85, Kings River 52--Jenny Sullivan scored 18 points and Elizabeth Sirchia had 15 for Golden West (7-0).

In the Golden West men’s basketball tournament:

Golden West 78, Glendale 75--Jason Joseph made a free throw with 14 seconds left and Toriano James made another with three seconds left to secure Golden West’s first-round victory. Joseph’s point gave Golden West a 77-75 lead, and Glendale’s Alfonso Pule missed a 10-foot jumper that could have tied the score. James was fouled getting the rebound. Scott Campbell led Golden West with 20 points.

Ric Van Scoyoc added 19 for Golden West (4-5), which plays Cerritos tonight at 8 p.m. in one semifinal.

In the Santa Barbara men’s tournament:

Long Beach 104, Saddleback 95--Ray Ankton hit a three-point basket with two seconds left to give Saddleback an 89-86 lead in regulation, but Long Beach’s Carroll Thompson made a three-pointer at the buzzer to tie the game. Long Beach outscored Saddleback, 15-6, in overtime.

In the San Jose men’s tournament:

Orange Coast 88, Contra Costa 84--Brian Spratt made eight consecutive free throws down the stretch to help the Pirates (7-3) hold on in the first round of the tournament. Spratt, who led OCC with 20 points, made all 12 of his free throws in the game.

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Fullerton 100, East Los Angeles 88--Garrison Hunter had 20 points and Bobby Terry had 19 to lead visiting Fullerton (6-4) over East Los Angeles (6-5).
