THE SIDELINES : Stockton Named Player of Week

John Stockton, who sparked the Utah Jazz to four straight victories, was named NBA Player of the Week today.

Stockton averaged 19.3 points, 18.3 assists and 4.5 steals during the week and had a .596 field-goal percentage. He made four of eight three-point attempts and moved into second place in the league in assists behind Magic Johnson and second in steals behind Alvin Robertson.

Stockton’s best game of the week came Saturday, when he scored 27 points and had 23 assists in a 105-95 victory over the Clippers at the Sports Arena. He had three rebounds and four steals and made nine of 16 from the field.

Stockton beat out Akeem Olajuwon of Houston, who averaged 30.7 points, 17.3 rebounds, 4.7 blocks and 2.0 steals in three games last week.
