A San Diego man has been arrested in the death Monday morning of a 3-year-old boy, police said.
Arrested was Jose Hernandez-Omana, 26, a boyfriend of the boy’s mother, Detective Dan Berglund said.
The victim was identified as Mario Martinez of the 4200 block of Newton Avenue.
Police said Hernandez-Omana became upset with the boy Sunday morning and reportedly kicked him several times. The boy’s mother was in another room with another child, and, when she returned, she found that her son was was not breathing, police said.
The boy was taken to Sharp Hospital, then transferred to Children’s Hospital, where he died about 5 a.m. Monday, said Mark Morelli, a hospital spokesman.
The San Diego County medical examiner said autopsy results are awaiting further tests.
