ROUNDUP : Capistrano Valley Holds On, Beats Corona del Mar

Brett McCorkle scored 25 points and Tom Airey had 24 to lead Capistrano Valley High School to a 76-61 victory over Corona del Mar in a nonleague boys’ basketball game Tuesday at Corona del Mar.

Trailing by 30 points early in the fourth quarter, Corona del Mar rallied and pulled within 10 with about two minutes remaining before Capistrano Valley made two three-point shots to seal the victory. Doug Hesse had 17 points and Jason Clark had 14 for the Sea Kings (2-4).

In other nonleague boys’ basketball games:

Bolsa Grande 67, Costa Mesa 54--Sy Sayareth scored 14 points to lead host Bolsa Grande (2-2).

Buena Park 80, Bellflower 54--Angel Barrios scored 23 points to lead visiting Buena Park (2-2).

Dana Hills 67, Saddleback 49--Keith Barnett had 24 points and six rebounds and Derrick Walsh had 17 points and six rebounds to lead host Dana Hills (2-3). Saddleback (1-3) was led by Jason Register’s 16 points.

St. Margaret’s 54, Capistrano Valley Christian 39--Ryan Westendorf had 33 points, 15 rebounds and seven steals for visiting St. Margaret’s (3-2). Nathan Owens scored 20 points for Capistrano Valley Christian (2-3).

San Clemente 56, Anaheim 41--Ed Morgan had 16 points, 22 rebounds and four blocked shots for visiting San Clemente (4-2), which outscored Anaheim, 27-11, in the second half.

Irvine 106, University 70--John Molle scored 35 points and had 11 rebounds to lead Irvine (5-0).

In the La Quinta boys’ tournament:

Estancia 83, Troy 39--Torrey Hammond had 17 points to lead Estancia, which outscored Troy, 25-4, in the fourth quarter.

Foothill 72, Torrance 70--Sean Amos scored on a baseline drive with three seconds remaining to give Foothill the first-round victory. Amos lead all scorers with 30 points.

In the El Dorado boys’ tournament:

Canyon 63, Sunny Hills 54--Abdi Barkhordar scored 16 points to lead Canyon. Brett Mitchelson has 23 points for Sunny Hills (1-4).

In the Beverly Hills boys’ tournament:

El Toro 67, St. Bernard’s 64--Rob Johnson scored 23 points, had eight rebounds and five assists to lead El Toro (3-1).

In the El Dorado girls’ tournament:

Canyon 58, Sunny Hills 42--Erin Waggoner had 26 points and Kori Dalbey added 11 for Canyon in a first-round game.

In the Savanna girls’ tournament:

Ocean View 54, Newport Harbor 39--Nikki Vivion had 20 points and 10 rebounds and Theresa Martini had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Ocean View (4-2).

Savanna 73, Los Amigos 47--Carrie Frederick had 25 points, 13 assists, 12 rebounds and 11 steals for Savanna (6-0) in a quarterfinal game.

Rancho Alamitos 65, Loara 50--Rancho Alamitos’ man-to-man press took its toll in the fourth quarter as Loara was outscored, 21-7.

In the Brea-Olinda girls’ tournament:

Brea-Olinda 66, Rosary 31--Freshman guard Nicole Erickson had 19 points for Brea-Olinda (5-0) in the first round.

Esperanza 60, Foothill 23--Lisa Ruppe had 14 points and eight rebounds for Esperanza (5-0) in a first-round game.

In nonleague girls’ basketball:

Capistrano Valley Christian 55, St. Margaret’s 11--Jennifer Smith had 10 points and 10 rebounds for host Capistrano Valley Christian (4-0).

La Habra 59, La Serna 23--Zrinka Kristich had 24 points and Ana Kristich had nine points, 19 rebounds and nine assists to lead visiting La Habra (2-0).

Dana Hills 57, Saddleback 17--Heather Haney scored 14 to lead Dana Hills (5-2).

El Modena 59, Orange Lutheran 41--Kate Farina had 16 points for visiting El Modena (4-0).

University 57, Laguna Hills 36--Tara Wolff had 17 points and seven rebounds for visiting University (2-4).
