A 27-year-old Camarillo man was injured when a masked gunman shot him as he sat in the passenger seat of a car in Ventura, police said.

Nelson D. Bingham was treated at the Ventura County Medical Center for a minor wound and released, Ventura police said.

Bingham and a friend, Mike Arreguin, 20, of Oxnard, had just visited Bingham’s sister at her condominium in the 1400 block of Iguana Circle when the shooting occurred about 9:40 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

As the two approached the exit from the condominium complex, a car pulled out and blocked their path, Ventura Police Sgt. Bob Anderson said.

A man appeared from behind a fence and fired a handgun, shattering the window and striking Bingham’s right shoulder, police said.

Arreguin drove around the car and sped away, intending to seek help at the California Highway Patrol office at 4656 Valentine Road, Anderson said. En route, however, he spotted a CHP officer who had made a traffic stop northbound on the Ventura Freeway near the Victoria Street off-ramp, Anderson said.

Arreguin stopped and aid was summoned for Bingham, Anderson said.

Anderson said police were trying to determine a motive for the shooting, which appeared to be random.
