A man was shot and killed in Lawndale while trying to stop his friend from settling a bar fight with a gun and the friend was arrested on suspicion of murder early Thursday, a sheriff’s spokesman said.

Carl Paape, 33, of Gardena died of a gunshot wound at Robert F. Kennedy Medical Center after the 12:30 a.m. shooting outside The Hut bar on Hawthorne Boulevard.

Deputies found Thomas Glover, 25, of Lawndale bent over his friend’s body outside the bar, Deputy Rich Erickson said. Glover was being held without bail.

According to witnesses, Paape was shot as he tried to dissuade Glover from entering the bar with a gun to settle a score, Erickson said. “An argument began . . . and while multiple witnesses from the bar looked on, Glover shot Paape once in the chest,” he said.

Before the shooting, Glover had argued with several bar patrons and was knocked to the ground during a fight that ensued in the parking lot, Erickson said.
