The Sidelines : The Mayor Is Now a Senator

Mayor Jim Durrell today was named president of the Ottawa Senators, an NHL expansion franchise.

Durrell, who said last week he will not seek a third term as mayor, said he does not see any conflict in doing both jobs temporarily, although his position as mayor won’t end until late next year.

“I don’t see that as a problem,” Durrell said at a news conference. “I happen to be blessed with an enormous amount of energy.”

Durrell’s appointment was announced by Bruce Firestone, chairman of Terrace Investments Ltd., the Ottawa group awarded an NHL franchise this month. The team will begin play in 1992-93.

Meanwhile, the Senators have asked the Pittsburgh Penguins for permission to talk to Scotty Bowman, who is director of player development and recruitment for the Penguins. Bowman reportedly is a front-runner for the job of general manager with the Senators.

Durrell edged out, among others, former New York Islanders star Denis Potvin for the job.
