THE SIDELINES : Tucson Bets on Expansion Team
Denver remains merely a finalist for a National League expansion team, but Tucson officials already are making plans to offer a spring-training home to a major-league team based in Colorado.
Denver was among six cities, including three in Florida, chosen this week as finalists by the NL expansion committee. Phoenix was among those eliminated.
Members of a task force seeking to keep Tucson as a spring-training site said during a meeting Wednesday that Denver has a strong claim on one of the two expansion teams to be awarded.
The task force was formed to look for a team to replace the Cleveland Indians, who plan to leave Tucson for Florida after 1992.
