A Coast Guard helicopter picked up the two survivors from a 45-foot San Pedro fishing boat that capsized about 80 miles west of San Francisco in heavy seas Wednesday, the service reported.
The fishermen were found at 3:18 p.m., a little over an hour after the boat radioed a mayday, which was also picked up by the tankers Exxon Philadelphia and Chevron Oregon. The vessels diverted to the scene as a Coast Guard C-130 headed out to help.
The helicopter flew the two men to San Francisco about 4 p.m. One of the survivors had a broken leg, said Coast Guard spokesman Lance Jones. The condition of the other was not immediately available.
The Coast Guard estimated that the seas were at 17 feet, driven by 40 knot winds.
