Construction is scheduled to begin shortly on a $750,000 device that is expected to allow Saddleback College to cut its cooling costs by $100,000 a year, officials said.

Called a “thermal energy storage system,” the 28,000-cubic-foot tank will be built beneath a parking lot for maintenance vehicles and be used to cool the library, cafeteria and other buildings on campus, said David Hill, the school’s director of facilities and maintenance.

Construction is scheduled to begin in February and be completed by July, Hill said.
