Garry Kasparov retained his world chess title for another three years by drawing against fellow Soviet Anatoly Karpov in the 22nd game of their match today.

The draw gave Kasparov an unassailable 12-10 lead since he needs only a 12-12 result to keep the crown.

But the match will continue to 12 1/2 points to decide who will take the winner’s $1.7-million share of the $3-million purse and the diamond-studded Korloff trophy valued at $1 million.

Kasparov needed a period of careful defense before repulsing Karpov’s determined attack.

The champion eventually decided to sacrifice a knight for three pawns to break a threatening wedge of pawns that cramped his game.

As they entered the final half hour of play, Kasparov forced the end of the game by setting up a series of checks that Karpov could not avoid--forcing the game to end in a draw.

The players shook hands and spoke briefly after the game, which ended Karpov’s third attempt to regain the title from Kasparov.
