Marowitz and LATC

In the Dec. 16 issue of Calendar, Jan Breslauer reviewed Charles Marowitz’s career in the theater and his projected plan for a resident company in Malibu (“Can’t Kick Him Out of This Club”). I was named as an adviser, which is accurate. I have devoted over 40 years to the development of theater in this area, and I welcome the opportunity to assist a writer and director whose abilities I respect.

I do not, however, wish to leave the impression that I share Marowitz’s critical evaluation of Gordon Davidson of the Mark Taper and Ahmanson theaters and Bill Bushnell of the LATC. Gordon Davidson’s contribution to the theater life of this city has been monumental. What international accolades he has received are more than merited. Bill Bushnell should be applauded for the success he has achieved, limited in a facility that is uninviting, almost inoperable, under-financed and located in a formidable part of town.

One who has not been responsible for the operation of a major theater undertaking cannot have any concept of the complexity, challenge, never-ending problems and disappointments involved. Theater is essential to the very life of a community. It is a fragile and precarious business and all of those who are part of it should cooperate and work together and not publicly belittle or criticize the efforts of others.
