COUNTERPUNCH LETTERS : Mr. Lumet, Thank You

Thank you, Sidney Lumet, for your masterful response (Dec. 10) to Kenneth Turan’s self-serving, holier-than-thou, know-it-all attack on Paul Newman and his performance in “Mr. and Mrs. Bridge” (Dec. 2).

I seethed with anger at Turan’s comments. However, not having seen the film, I did not feel qualified to comment on Newman’s performance. I should have known better. There has never been a time when Newman has not given the best of his talent, which is enormous. There are many of us who sincerely hope he will go on having the courage to stretch that talent.
