In Excess, who along with Rouvignac made a two-horse race of Monday’s San Gabriel Handicap, won the $113,100 grass stake by a head before 19,638 fans at Santa Anita.

In Excess, the slight favorite in the betting, ran behind Rouvignac for three-quarters of a mile, then outfinished his rival in a stretch-long drive.

In Excess, an Irish-bred 3-year-old colt who won his third stakes race in the United States since his first start for trainer Bruce Jackson at Del Mar in July, was timed in 1:47 1/5 for 1 1/8 miles and paid $5.80 to win. Rouvignac, ridden by Alex Solis, finished 1 1/4 lengths ahead of Kanatiyr.
