Boxer Marcellus Allen was shot to death by his estranged girlfriend when he returned their 2-month-old son to her apartment, police said today.

Allen, 24, was a light heavyweight who fought for a world championship last year. He died at Emanuel Hospital and Health Center Wednesday morning, about 12 hours after he was taken there by his father.

Danielle Anderson, 27, admitted shooting Allen but she was not arrested, Portland police Sgt. Derrick Foxworth said.

Foxworth said the Multnomah County district attorney’s office would decide whether charges would be brought against the woman. Asked about reports that she claimed Allen had threatened her, Foxworth said: “I would think that that would be an issue that might be raised.”

Allen, who won 13 of his 15 professional fights, was ranked No. 15 by the International Boxing Federation when he won his last fight, a 10-round decision over Steve Harvey Nov. 18.

Allen suffered his only two pro defeats while fighting for championships in 1990, losing in a 10th-round technical knockout to World Boxing Organization light heavyweight champion Michael Moorer, and dropping a 12-round decision to Audrey Nelson, the International Boxing Congress champion.
