It’s a new year so New York Ranger Coach Roger Neilson decided to give his team a new look.

It worked, because Troy Mallette, Ray Sheppard and Kelly Kisio, playing together for the first time, each scored a goal in the second period at Pittsburgh to lead the Rangers to a 7-5 victory over the Penguins.

Neilson revamped all his forward lines in an effort to reverse a 2-9-1 skid against the Penguins at Pittsburgh.

Boston 8, Vancouver 3--Ken Hodge stole the puck and skated in alone for a short-handed goal to break a 3-3 tie at Boston.

Cam Neely had two goals, his 23rd and 24th of the season, for the Bruins.

It was the Adams Division-leading Bruins’ first victory after a loss and three ties. Vancouver’s sixth consecutive loss came in Coach Bob McCammon’s 500th game.

Minnesota 3, Toronto 3--Doug Shedden, whose tripping penalty led to Minnesota’s go-ahead goal early in the third period, atoned by tipping in Dave Reid’s floating shot with 4:20 left in regulation at Bloomington, Minn., as the Maple Leafs kept the heat on the North Stars.

Peter Ing, who made 31 saves, has allowed only 27 goals in starting each of Toronto’s last 11 games.

Chicago 5, New Jersey 3--Michel Goulet scored twice at Chicago and goalie Ed Belfour became the NHL’s first 25-game winner this season as the Blackhawks increased their overall point total to 59. Belfour ran his mark to 25-10-2 with 21 saves.

St. Louis 8, Quebec 7--Brett Hull scored on a deflection with six minutes to go at St. Louis as the Blues ended a three-game losing streak.
