COLLEGE BASKETBALL PACIFIC 10 ROUNDUP : Washington Knocks Off Arizona

Dion Brown scored 13 of his 21 points in the second half and had 11 rebounds Thursday night, leading Washington to a 70-56 upset of fourth-ranked Arizona in a Pacific 10 opener at Seattle.

The victory ended the Huskies’ 10-game losing streak against the Wildcats. Washington (9-1) had not beaten Arizona (10-2) since the 1984-85 season, a 60-58 decision in Seattle.

The Huskies led, 33-20, at halftime, and Arizona closed to within seven points several times in the second half, but Washington held on by making 12 of 14 free throws in the final 2:15.

Matt Muehlebach scored 13 points for Arizona, which made only 34% of its shots.

Washington State 95, Arizona State 86--Bennie Seltzer and Neil Derrick sparked a 21-4 run in the second half and the Cougars downed the Sun Devils at Pullman, Wash.

Derrick scored 25 points, Seltzer and Rob Corkrum added 19 each for Washington State (8-2).

Isaac Austin had 21 points for Arizona State (9-2).

Oregon 73, California 67--Bob Fife made three free throws in the final minute and the Ducks outlasted the Bears at Eugene, Ore.

The Ducks (6-5) had a 48-35 lead, but the Bears (4-6) got back to within 48-44 when Billy Dreher hit two three-pointers and Roy Fisher hit another.

Cal closed the gap to 67-66 on another three-pointer by Dreher with 3:20 left, but a basket by Oregon’s Richard Lucas and Fife’s shots put the game out of reach.

Dreher scored 20, Fisher added 18 and Brian Hendrick had 16 points and 11 rebounds for Cal. Brandon scored 19, Kevin Mixon had 18 and Lucas added 17.

Oregon State 73, Stanford 66--Teo Alibegovic scored 24 points and Will Brantley added 20 as the Beavers (6-4) beat the Cardinal at Corvallis, Ore.

John Patrick had 16 points for Stanford (7-4), and Adam Keefe had 11 points and 11 rebounds.
